Title of the Book YOOKOSO
Author(s) Yasu-Hiko Tohsaku
Target level Secondary School, University/College
Publisher McGraw-Hill

A proficiency-based textbook designed for beginning level college students. Pros: has lots of exercises; has grammar explanations in English with examples for students to study on their own; allows flexibility for teacher to incorporate grammar and oral proficiency in their own way; has pictures and culture notes; generally looks like textbooks students are used to; can use Book I for two years. Cons: expensive; chapters are long; college-oriented; large amounts of vocabulary (I break the chapters down into smaller units and limit vocabulary); oral and reading activities sometimes seem inauthentic; doesn't teach speech levels very much.
