An attractive text using Japanese script from the beginning. Each chapter contains several "functions" of language, and grammar is discussed in context. Almost all drill and other activities are meaningful, with pictures or other contexts provided. There is enough material (with some supplementing) to use this one text for a four-year high school program. The text is written for adult learners in Japan, but can be easily adapted for use in high schools. The text starts with the -masu form but later adds practice at other levels of politeness. Each chapter also includes a short reading selection and a listening comprehension section. Needs supplementing, but well worth the time. Paperback textbook, $29.00. Workbook, $37.50. Set of four 60-minute cassettes, $80.00.Gakken, Kinokuniya Bookstore, Sasuga Japanese Bookstore
