Elementary Functional Japanese (henceforth EFJ) is published in three volumes, covering 1.5 to 2 years of language instruction. EFJ attempts to address the optimal features for a textbook that satisfies the student's eagerness to speak Japanese and the instructor's desire to balance mastery of all language skills with cross-cultural understanding.
