Title of the Book Advanced Japanese: Social and Economic Issues in Japan and the U.S.
Author(s) Yoshiko Higurashi
Publisher Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Japan
Year of publication 1990

Advanced Japanese (henceforth AJ) deals with topics related to society, economy, business and culture selected for those who are motivated to use Japanese in business situations. The knowledge of these topics is a must for foreign business professionals who plan to deal with or practice in Japan.

With AJ , students continue to develop communication skills in Japanese while learning about the culture that shapes the people of Japan. They will learn how a rich cultural heritage affects ways of doing business in Japan. More specifically, students will learn to speak and write appropriately in social context, to create coherent discourse, and to have grammatical competence in Japanese. They will also learn to critically comprehend and analyze texts, to make judgments and support their opinions, and to describe hypothetical situations.

AJ is intended for advanced students who have finished the Kyoiku Kanji, the approximately 1000 kanji that are introduced in elementary school in Japan. AJ aims at the acquisition and reproduction of the Chugaku Kanji, the 949 kanji introduced in junior high school in Japan. Those students who complete the book will master all the 1945 Joyo Kanji, which every Japanese is required to study during the nine years of compulsory education. The knowledge of Joyo Kanji enables students to read any modern Japanese publications including books and newspapers.

Since its publication in 1990, AJ has been adopted by numerous universities including most prestigious universities in Japan, North America, and Australia. Individual business professionals who are already practicing have found AJ particularly interesting and helpful.
