Abstract

The cover letter and curriculum vitae are both extremely important in the job search process. A search committee?s initial impressions of a candidate are formed by how a candidate's credentials and past achievements are presented on paper. Before a search committee even proceeds to the teaching portfolio, let alone scheduling an interview, they will read both the cover letter and vitae carefully. In some cases, impressions formed at this initial stage can mean moving a job applicant from a larger pool to a shorter list. What should be included in both documents? How should an applicant balance information between the letter and the vitae? What is the search committee looking for? This presentation will offer insight into this earliest stage of the job search.
