Out of five C's, we are used to deal with Communication and Cultures standards and Comparisons of language and culture happens naturally in class. However Connections and Communities standards are more difficult. Technology is one of "weave" of curricular elements. In its introduction, Japanese Standards stresses the importance of technology and advises us "to keep abreast of changes in technology." The Internet is an important part of technology today.
Learning scenario is a good way to implement National Standards into daily teaching. It is recommended to analyze what is missing from the existing curriculum using learning scenarios instead of changing the curriculum to the National Standards. Pen Pal project has been used for many years, but its Internet version, key pal project speeds up the correspondence and teachers can keep in touch closely to discuss the projects rather than students' finding individual partners. Although we need to be aware of privacy and safety online issues, it is exciting to publish and read self-introduction with photo online. The Internet will make Communities standards easier and encourages learners to become a life-long and autonomous learner. It also provides teachers content materials in Japanese to achieve Connections standards.
Language learning is ultimately an acquisition of communication skills and the Internet has provided us new ways to communicate and obtain information. Our students in the 21st century will view the Internet as radio or TV from our generation. The Internet will help achieve Five C's by making students active learners by encouraging real communication.
